Wine of the Week: 2006 Kruger-Rumpf, Rosé, Feinherb, Nahe, Germany

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

One of the most honest to goodness amazing rosĂ©s we’ve come across in a super long time. While it’s subjective, this wine has it all. Impressive acid balance and loads of minerals, restrained red fruit and a pale, pink color. Rarely does a rosĂ© display such impressive complexity and profound secondary notes as this stunner. And for the price? Vergessen wir es

Wine of the Week: 2006 Aurélien Chatagnier, Saint-Joseph, Rhone, France

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

Made by an honest-to-goodness Gentleman Farmer, this micro-production Syrah from St-Joseph in the Northern Rhone is about as intense and complex as Syrah can get for this price range. Meaty and complex with notes of thyme, rosemary and lavender. Well concentrated black fruit and balancing acid, but this wine is all about secondary notes. Black pepper, meat drippings, ripe but gripping tannins. Amazing by its self or with game and red meat dishes.

Wine of the Week: 2008 Cave de Bissey, les Quarts, Pouilly Vinzelles, Macon, France

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

This past week’s Tuesday Tasting opened many Block 7′s regular’s eyes to the historical significance of the noble white variety of Burgundy – Chardonnay. Of all the brilliant wines be poured, including Grand Cru Corton Charlemagne, the real show stopper for most was not the $165 wine, but the $35 Macon!

Minerally profound, with and racy acidity, brilliant texture and an ethereal finish – Cave de Bissy’s les Quarts single vineyard Pouilly Vinzelles defied conventional wisdom that great White Burgundy comes with a great price.

Made by Pouilly Vinzelles’ regional co-op with fruit sourced from one of the most significant and storied quality vineyards of the Macon, the wine offers a unique mineral richness not often found outside of Burgundy’s elite producers. Coupled with green apple and citrusy exuberance, the wine comes across to be a white wine for everybody – from Burghounds to thirst quenchers.
