Houston Press Best of Awards – Houston’s Best Burger is at Block 7!

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

“At Block 7, dry-aged beef is topped with well-melted Gruyère and a bacon relish that adds a hint of smoke and edge to the already flavorful meat. The kitchen keeps additions to a minimum (arugula, Dijon aioli), and this restraint, plus an excellent bun from local Slow Dough bakers, keeps what could be an over-the-top burger from becoming pretentious. Block 7 also serves up toothsome sweet potato fries and one of the most reasonably priced wine lists in town, making the burger experience at the glass-lined Heights eatery an excellent one.”

Wine of the Week: 1985 & 2009 Domaine Huet, Vouvray, France

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010
There are very, very few producers in the world in the world that demand momentous attention in the wine world. Names such as Domaine Romanée Conti, Petrus, Vega Sicilia and others are coveted beyond all else as they have maintained a devoted commitment to quality that borders on the spiritual.

Enter Domaine Huet of Vouvray; considered by many to be the greatest producer of the Loire Valley due to their remarkable commitment to quality on par with the greats of the rest of the world, and their loyal usage of biodynamic production – one of the very first of the classic producers of France to do so. Huet is truly one of the “First Growths of Europe.”

Make no mistake, when Huet is on (and they are very seldom not), they are comparable to any wine in Europe – whether it come from Montrachet, Sauternes or the Mosel.

Today Block 7 offers a very rare treat – a two vintage horizontal of two classic vintages.
2009 – a vintage of a lifetime, and 1985 – a rare glimpse into the past:

-1985 Domaine Huet, Moelleux, “Le Mont” – 94/bottle
-1985 Domaine Huet, Moelleux “Clos du Borg” – 94/bottle
-2009 Domaine Huet, Sec, “Clos du Borg” – 48/bottle
-2009 Domaine Huet, “Cuvee Constance” – 189/bottle

All wine arrives on Friday October 30th

Beer of the week: Brasserie Lebbe L’AmalthĂ©e, Gascony, France

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

$20 restaurant & $12 retail

It seems that just about every product we purchase in our lives was produced with the consumer in mind. While something is to be said for that, we at Block 7 look for a bit more than that. We look for wine, beer and sake and serve food that is both appealing, but also nourishes the soul – that there was more to it than the never ending quest to buffer the bottom line.

Enter Brasserie Lebbe, located in the very heart of the French Pyrenees, and owned by a Belgian ex-pat cheese farmer and beer enthusiast. Pierre Lebbe doesn’t make his Farmhouse Ale for the masses or even for his neighbor. He makes it for himself to quench his thirst after a long day with his herd of goats. With a measly production of only 600 bottles/50 cases per month – it’s a hobby and nothing more.

Crisp, grassy and with loads of citrus, malt, dried herbs and hop bitterness. Both rich and intense as well as crisp and refreshing. Block 7 is honored to present this beer to you, for the first time in Texas!

Sunday Music – Lise Liddel 9.26.10

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

Sunday September 26, 2010 from 7-8pm

Lise Liddell is a singer/songwriter residing in Houston, TX. Her CD’s include, White Heart, Lovers’ Moon, and In the Wake. She is currently working on her fourth CD in Austin, TX. Liddell’s songs tend to sneak up on you – and beat you over the head with a bear club when they finally find your functioning brain cells. Hiding beneath the ambient soft rock façade are some lyrics that aren’t so soft – or ambient. This seemingly demure little package Lise Liddell may be a little more dangerous than she seems.

Wine of the week: 2005 Pellegrini, Family Blend, Sonoma County, California

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

Rarely does a value bottle whop us over our heads, but at a recent tasting Pellegrini’s 2005 Family Blend did just that. Away are the overripe, high alcohol fruit bombs or thin, uninteresting whippets that one normally finds from California at this price. No – this wine is intense, rich and succulent without the rocket fuel alcohol that usually comes with this price-tag. Amazing texture with black fruit notes and impressive extraction. The wine just coats your tongue – which is what you’d expect from a blend of Zinfandel, Merlot and jaw-dropping 100+ year old Carignan vines. The wine drinks like it came from an old vine parcel within la Liviniere, Minervois – definitely not Sonoma County. Unlike a great, old vine Carignan from an esteemed producer such as Gauby or l’Oustal Blanc, this one is accessible for every pocketbook.

We’ll be pouring this wine, along with several other amazing values during this weekend’s Saturday Tasting from 12-2pm. See you then!

Block 7 Wine Company offers customers a concept-fusing combination of retail wine space, wine bar, and restaurant, the latter of which delights diners with a MENU of elegant dishes backed by premium ingredients. Start by noshing on a Slow Dough Bakery pretzel with herbed honey mustard ($4), or opt for truffle popcorn with Italian black truffle salt ($4), the secret snack served to the Illuminati at movie-theater concession stands across America. Dry-aged fans of dry-aged beef might go for the 21-day dry-aged prime rib eye ($29) or choose the handheld convenience of the dry-aged patty on the Block 7 burger, which also sports gruyere cheese and smoked bacon “relish” ($12). Flatbreads, such as a “whole pig” option topped with Italian sausage, prosciutto, and smoked bacon ($12), defy Einstein’s Law of Two-Dimensional Flavor Containment, and a “sloppy Giuseppe” with ground venison and wild boar confit ($10) exposes the inadequate sloppy sandwiches of childhood. A downsized LUNCH MENU is also available to quash midday appetite coups, in addition to $9 lunch specials served Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (and Saturday beginning at noon). With a different lunch special each day, you can opt for choices such as bacon-wrapped meatloaf on a Wednesday, whiskey-infused pork chop on a Thursday, or fish tacos on a Friday.

Although today’s deal is not valid for alcohol, Block 7 gives its customers the option of ordering any bottle on its wine list at retail price or purchasing a selection from the retail operation and enjoying it with no corkage fee. Oenophiles and novices alike should stop by on Sunday evenings, when live music helps eardrums block out the taunting num-num sounds emanating from taste buds.

Wine of the Week: 2007 Domaine des 3 Cellier, Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Rhone, France

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

Tough times call for remarkable values. Since Block 7 opened, our #1 priority has been PQR (Price/Quality Ratio). In other words: the quality of wine in the bottle far exceeds the price-tag. We think we’ve done a pretty good job seeking out wines that exemplify our philosophy, and in the process we’ve obliterated barriers to wine appreciation and knowledge. Not all of the wine we carry may suit your particular fancy or fit within your comfort zone and that’s OK. One of the great joys in life is experiencing the new and different, and we find immense pleasure in introducing wine that will alter our guests perception of what wine is.

With this, we introduce one of the great values we have come across in a very long time. 2007 Chateauneuf-du-Pape has been rocking the wine world every since harvest, and has only built up (along with the price) ever since The Wine Advocate released their ratings last fall. Naturally, when it came possible to offer an actual, unheard-of value AOC Chateauneuf, that delivers ten-fold for the price, it obviously raised some eyebrows among the Block 7 Wine Team.

A classic blend of 50% Grenache, 20% Terret Noir, 20% Clairette, 5% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre – 2007 Domaine des 3 Cellier Rouge is a petri dish of Southern Rhone complexity with deep, extracted primary notes of cherry, blackberry and secondary notes of Herbes de Provence, meat drippings, earth and much more. Plus, unlike most ’07 CdP’s we’ve encountered this one is impeccably balanced, with in-line alcohol and acid. Not one component overpowers another. It’s accessible to the novice, and impressive for the experienced.

Try it by the bottle or by the glass.
