Music Note

Who is Peekaboo Theory?

What’s in a name? Just like a game of peekaboo with your Mom as a baby, lots of what this band brings to the table will surprise you. If you had to slap a label on it, their genre spans experimental, rock, electronic & avant-garde, but much of their appeal arises from their energetic & pulse-thumping theatrics on stage.

Where in the world is… Peekaboo Theory?

They came together about 3 years ago in Houston from diverse geographical and musical backgrounds, and have been surprising the Houston music scene ever since.

Why we think they rock…

Besides their undeniable talent, Peekaboo Theory proclaims that they strive for passion in all areas, and that creating music is fulfilling their life’s calling. Who can argue with that? More power to you guys!

b7 Artist Palette: Sarah Hazel

Artist Palette

Who is Sarah Hazel?

Having had no previous experience or training, the artist started painting in late 2004. A relative encouraged the new artist to display her first 30 works on Texas Independence Day in the Pioneer Log House Memorial Museum. However, it wasn’t until November, 2006, that she started pursuing the making of art as a career. To that end, she has exhibited in several venues in Houston, including the Glassell Student
Exhibit in the spring of 2007. She was asked to be a community artist juror for Yes Prep’s Student Art Show, and has repeatedly been asked to be a select artist for the Center for Hearing and Speech’s fundraiser, Via Colori. She spent her formative years in Mississippi, but attended high school and college in Hawaii. She met and married her husband in Aspen, Colorado, and they briefly lived in southern California before moving back to her husband’s hometown of Houston. She and her family, which includes four daughters, have lived in Houston for 24 years in the East End, the Third Ward, and most recently the Rice U/Med Center area.

What did Sarah create for Block 7?

2_corrugated_metalSarah Hazel painted a wine related still life series in conjunction with the opening of Block 7 Wine Company. All three works were painted in oils on three very different surfaces re-purposed from remnants of our former warehouse.

The series includes 3 Still Life with Ukulele pieces:

  1. oil on marble tiles magnetically mounted on metal drawers
  2. oil on corrugated metal (shown right – click on the image to see the entire series)
  3. oil on canvas from discarded army cot stretched over a frame also made from the cot

All materials were salvaged from the warehouse except for the paints, magnets, chains and bolts.

Where can you find Sarah?

Though very passionate about painting, the artist is an equally passionate writer, and blogs regularly about the artistic process. Her blog can be accessed through http://sarahhazel.blogspot.com

Sarah Hazel’s Still Life with Ukulele Series will be displayed in a special exhibit along with other works created in celebration of the Block 7 Grand Opening.

b7 Music Note: Come See My Dead Person

Music Note

Who is Come See My Dead Person?

Don’t let the name fool you, this band is an eclectic blend of multi-cultural music unbound by any one genre. Fusing a multitude of styles from folk, rock, bluegrass, gypsy, and jazz, to polka, punk, country, latin, and soul, CSMDP provides a little something for everyone and a whole lot in between.

Where in the world is… Come See My Dead Person?

The band hails from Galveston county and surrounding areas throughout Houston.

Why we think they rock…

First of all, look at all the instruments that are represented in this band. You’ve got the standard guitar, drums, bass, vocals, but there’s also mandolin, violin & banjo. And the singer’s voice is killer, like totally dead killer.

Come See My Dead Person

Check them out for yourself at http://www.csmdp.com & check out their events calendar for postings on where you can see them live (he he – no pun intended on the dead vs. alive suggestion). We heard they are heading into the studio to record their first full length album, but you will hear them first on the B7 Boombox Jam compilation CD. How do you get it? Well, you have to come to our Grand Opening Bash of course!
